Exo members: everything you need to know about the band
Exo (Korean: ; RR: Ekso; all caps) is a South Korean-Chinese boy band based in Seoul that was established in 2011 by SM Entertainment and debuted in 2012. There are nine members in the group: Xiumin, Suho, Lay, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, and Seun. They are widely known for releasing music and performing in Korean, Mandarin, and Japanese.
Exo-K (Suho, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, and Sehun) and Exo-M (Xiumin, Lay, Chen, Kris, Luhan, and Tao) debuted with twelve members. In 2014 and 2015, Kris, Luhan, and Tao left the group individually due to legal disputes with SM Entertainment. Prior to the 2014 release of their third EP Overdose, Exo-K and Exo-M performed music in Korean and Mandarin, respectively. Since then, Exo have performed exclusively as a single unit, although their music continues to incorporate multiple languages. Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin debuted as Exo-CBX members in 2016, while Sehun and Chanyeol began promoting as Exo-SC members in 2019. Exo’s first studio album, XOXO (2013), was released alongside their breakthrough single “Growl” and received favourable reviews and sold over one million copies, making them the first Korean act in twelve years to achieve this feat. The group’s subsequent Korean studio albums each sold more than one million copies, expanding on their initial commercial success. Don’t Mess Up My Tempo (2018), Exo’s sixth studio album, debuted at number 23 on the US Billboard 200 and sold over 1.9 million copies in South Korea, making it their best-selling album there.
Exo have won numerous accolades, including five consecutive Album of the Year awards at the Mnet Asian Music accolades and two consecutive Artist of the Year awards at the Melon Music Awards, and have performed more than one hundred concerts across four headlining tours and multiple joint tours. From 2014 to 2018, the group rated among the top five most influential celebrities on the Forbes Korea Power Celebrity list and have been dubbed the “Kings of K-pop” and “biggest boyband in the world” by various media outlets. In reality, there were a total of 12 Exo members who were divided into two groups: Exo K and Exo M. Exo K consists of Kai, Sehun, Baekhyun, Suho, Chanyeol, and D.O., whereas Exo M consists of Chen, Lay, Xiumin, as well as previous members Luhan, Tao, and Kris, and they performed in Mandarin. Baekhyun
